Naturism, Nature and Respect: Your Stay Near Charco del Palo

Just a short drive or walk from our rural retreats lies Charco del Palo, a unique seaside village with a long history of naturism in Lanzarote. Founded in the 1970s by German entrepreneur Gregor Kaiser, the area was originally called Castillo del Papagayo before being renamed after a nearby natural pool, or charco. It became the first official naturist resort in the Canary Islands and has grown into a welcoming international community where living simply, openly and close to nature is part of everyday life.

Charco del Palo is not a typical beach destination. Instead of soft sand, you’ll find three beautiful natural swimming spots carved into the volcanic coastline. Two are protected from the waves and perfect for relaxed bathing, while the third opens out to the sea, ideal for snorkelling. With no big hotels or tourist buzz, the village has maintained its original charm — quiet, friendly and grounded in the values of freedom, self-acceptance and respect for others.

Before going further, it’s helpful to understand that naturism is more than just being without clothes. While often confused with nudism, naturism is actually a lifestyle choice that values body acceptance, simplicity, connection with nature, and respectful coexistence. Nudism tends to focus more on the physical act of being nude, often for comfort or enjoyment, whereas naturism carries a wider philosophy about how we live, not just what we wear.

These values align closely with what we offer in our unique accommodations: Casa Tabaiba, The Secret Garden, Eco Cabin, and Cabaña de Lola. While we are not a naturist retreat, we welcome all guests who appreciate the balance between privacy, nature and thoughtful living. If you practise naturism, you are very welcome to do so within your own lodging and private garden. These spaces are designed to feel peaceful and secluded, giving you the freedom to enjoy your stay in the way that feels most natural to you.

We do kindly ask that if you step outside of your private area — for example, moving through shared outdoor paths or parking zones — you wear something out of respect for other guests or neighbours who may not share the same practice. It’s a simple way we make sure everyone feels comfortable and respected.

Whether you’re visiting to disconnect from stress, reconnect with nature, or simply enjoy the raw beauty of Lanzarote, our spaces are here to support that experience. Each accommodation is different, but all are full of character, surrounded by greenery, and set up to help you slow down and settle in.

And when you feel like exploring the naturist lifestyle more openly, Charco del Palo is right around the corner, with a welcoming community and plenty of space to enjoy it freely.

If you have any questions or want help deciding which retreat is right for you, we’re happy to help. This part of the island offers something special — a mix of freedom, calm and connection — and we’re excited to share it with you.
